My early experience of state violence, through corporal punishment in English schools, led to the strong motive to work toward a just society. Yet in my experience, this can only be achieved outside institutions and outside the opportunism toward the market, which I have perceived from early childhood onward — in its mechanisms of reward (wage) and punishment — as corrupt and brutal. Out of this conflict, in my internal resistance, I pass through 30 years of searching for an attitude, for a way of living and working that makes possible a reintegration of the human being and of the whole experienced reality into society and economy. In the effort to survive as a whole human being — and consequently to preserve the whole ecosystem as valuable — I oppose toxic structures, withdraw from false economic logics and patterns, fail, try, describe, make visible in public. I begin the “actual work” as the attempt of the human being to orient themself toward what is truly immediate, humane and comprehensively relevant, in order to ground in it a new economy that understands value more broadly.
Many encounters and private moments shape the work. Therefore, this retrospective is more than merely showing works — it illustrates a long path of three decades, in search of a human answer to the economic and social questions of our time.
Addressed are themes such as the future of work, New Work, the Universal Basic Income, alternative economies, and the horrors of the state’s treatment of people in poverty. Throughout all these years, the essential focus is to gain insights and understanding — through subjective intervention, through the free individual that preserves diversity — that reveal the possibilities of a development that goes beyond the brutal logic of a simplifying capitalism.
